Senior Breakfast, Senior Awards, Graduation Practice!

There are many exciting, but important, events happening this week and next!

o   We anticipate starting at 9:00 am in the auditorium
o   After senior awards you will earn a “graduation prep day” certificate to be used on May 18th.

The non-profit Pearl High School Heritage Classes Foundation, Incorporated, is proud to continue its practice of awarding scholarship grants to deserving high school African American seniors who are pursuing a degree in Engineering or Computer Science at a four year college.  
Each applicant must have two sealed letters of recommendation from the following should be mailed with the application:
1.         School Personnel, i.e. counselor, principal or teacher.
2.         Community Person, i.e. pastor, Sunday School teacher, community official.
3.         Must have a GPA of 3.0
4.         Complete the counselor evaluation form(s) for each applicant.
5.         Submit an official copy of the applicant’s high school transcript with each application.
6.         Return the forms, postmarked not later than May 30,  2015 to:

 College 101
College 101 is taking place Sunday, July 12 from 9:30am – 4pm. It is a program program for rising 9 – 12 grade girls and their parent or guardian. We'll discuss financial aid, finding the right college fit, and the application process.

Immediately following the College 101 session those girls participating in the College Road Trip will head over to the MTSU residence halls where we’ll spend our first night. In the morning we'll board buses to Memphis TN to start the College Road Trip portion of the event.  The current route has us going to colleges in Memphis TN, Mississippi, and Alabama, we’ll return Thursday, July 16.

Cost for the full program for Girl Scouts is $75 before May 15 with a $5 increase for not-yet-girl scouts, prices increase after May 15. No charge for adults to attend College 101.

The Middle Tennessee Mechatronics Engineering Scholarship program (MT)2
funded by the National Science Foundation through its S-STEM program . 
This (MT)2 Scholar’s Program provides up to $10,000 per year for three years as a scholarship along with enhanced activities such as a trip to Berlin, Germany or undergraduate research.
MTSU has the only bachelor’s degree in Mechatronics Engineering in Tennessee. This program combines mechanical, computer and electrical engineering, systems integration and project management. Graduates will be in high demand. The U.S. Department of Labor estimated that in 2011 there were 600,000 open positions in fields related to mechatronics engineering nationwide.
(MT)2 provides scholarships to new freshman Mechatronics Engineering majors at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) who meet the following criteria:
  • Are citizens of the United States or nationals of the United States;
  • Are enrolled full time as a Mechatronics Engineering major at MTSU;
  • Show academic promise (High School GPA >= 3.0 and Math ACT subscore >=24);
  • Demonstrate financial need (as determined by FAFSA);
  • Are willing to participate in the (MT)2 cohort program.

Priority is given to females and underrepresented minorities who meet the above criteria.
You must have applied and have been accepted into MTSU as a Mechatronics Engineering major and you must complete the (MT)2 scholarship application form at ttps://stem4.mtsu.edu/MechatronicScholars/.   
You must have two teachers send recommendation letters for the scholarship on your behalf to Dr. Ahad Nasab (Ahad.Nasab@mtsu.edu). Application review will begin May 18, 2015 with initial announcements by June 1, 2015.

Reminder: Hillwood Class of ’68 scholarship has been extended and must be returned to Mrs. Dickerson by the end of the school day March 18. I have to print your transcript and ACT scores, so I will not accept them any later than 2:05pm on March 18th.

Also, ALL MNPS scholarships must be to Mrs. Dickerson by April 6th so I can attach your transcript and ACT score

I received a phone call today from the Bellevue Volunteer Fire Department: their applications are less than half what they typically get. They always give away EIGHT $1000.00 scholarships and would like to continue that tradition. Please apply!

Hillwood class of 68, MNPS, MNEF... LOCAL money to be awarded!!!

HILLWOOD CLASS OF 68 SCHOLARSHIP

The scholarship is a one-time award of $1000 guranteed to a HILLWOOD STUDENT> . It will be awarded in two increments of $500. The first will be paid prior to the start of your freshman year. The second will be awarded after the committee receives proof that you completed your first semester/quarter with an overall 3.0 GPA or higher.

1.    Complete the Application Form (located outside of Mrs. Dickerson’s office). Applications must be submitted by March 20th 2015.
2.    Please fill in all information to the best of your ability.
3.    Mrs. Dickerson  will provide the scholarship committee with your transcript and your ACT and/or SAT scores..
4.    Interviews will be conducted in early April 2015.
5.    We encourage you to submit letters of recommendation from Teachers, Employers, Church Staff or family friends but no more than three. Each letter should be no more than one page in length. The person writing the letter should explain how they know you and why they believe you will succeed in college.
6.    If there is not enough space provided to answer some of the questions, then feel to attach additional sheets.
7.    DO NOT STAPLE THE APPLICATION PAGES – A paper clip is acceptable.
8.    Applications should be given to Mrs. Dixkerson at Hillwood no later than 12:00 March 20th, 2015.

MNEF Scholarship Program

2.   Johnella H. Martin Scholarship, which goes to an aspiring public school teacher graduating from MNPS this year or an individual renewing from last year.
Janice M. Scott Memorial Scholarship Fund (JMSMSF)
$2,500 scholarship offered on a one-time basis.  A check for the amount of the scholarship will be sent directly to the college or university of each scholarship recipient for posting to his/her student account.   
The application and required documents must be received or postmarked on or before the deadline date of March 31, 2015.  
Qualification/Eligibility
US Citizen or permanent resident of US
GPA of 3.0/equivalent or higher (out of a 4.0 scale)
High School Senior who will matriculate full-time at a US accredited four-year college or university within the fifty states or District of Columbia.
Have demonstrated leadership abilities through participating in community services or other extra curricular activities.
Combined adjusted income of the parents cannot exceed $60,000.

MNPS Scholarships
There are 4 MNPS scholarships available for the 2014-2015 school year.  The scholarships and the requirements are listed below:
The Charlotte and Elbert Brooks Scholarship, a $1000 award, was established to reward academic excellence and service to school and community.  Students must be in the top 10% of the class to apply.

The Nettie Adams James Scholarship, a $250 award is open to any student in the top 25%.  Students must have demonstrated good citizenship in the school and community.
The J.T. Perkins Scholarship, a $500 award, is for students that demonstrate academic excellence, school and community involvement and strong leadership skills.  Graduating seniors should be in the top 25% of their graduating class. 

The Excellence in the Arts Scholarship, is a $500 award for students that demonstrate strong academic records as well as outstanding creative abilities in the area of fine arts, including painting, drawing, graphic design, and photography.  Applicants will be required to submit 3 images of original pieces of artwork completed within one year of the application deadline.  Images of work should be in JPEG format and submitted on a flash drive or CD with the application packet.  These JPEG files must be good quality images that are as close as possible to viewing the piece in person. The JPEG must also be large enough to show your entire piece (do not crop your artwork). Each JPEG must be labeled with a number, and the artist's name. Flash drive/CD should be clearly marked with the student’s name and high school.
Completed Application must be given to your counselor by 2:00 Monday April 6, 2015.

Create-A-Greeting-Card Scholarship

Click here to enter: 8th Annual Create-A-Greeting-Card-Scholarship Contest. Submissions are being accepted now through the deadline date of February 18, 2015.

Entering the contest is easy and it is open to both students and active members of the United States
Military. Entrants must submit a unique photo, piece of artwork, or computer graphic for the front of a greeting card. The entrant with the best design will win a $10,000 scholarship and have his/her design made into an actual card to be sold in our line.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated
Upsilon Psi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated will be awarding scholarships to five qualified applicants in the amount of $500, of which two will be given to students that will attend a historically black college or university (HBCU). 
Scholarship Criteria:
The applicant must:
1.    Be an African-American male or female.
2.    Be a high school senior.
3.    Be accepted or plan to attend a 4-year college or university.
4.    Be active in school, church, and/or community.
5.    Have at least a 2.8 cumulative grade point average.

TSU Alumni Association, Nashville Chapter
The Nashville Chapter of the Tennessee State University Association is offering scholarships in the amount of $1,000 to deserving students who need financial assistance.   Students who will be graduating in the spring of 2015, and are interested in applying, must meet the following criteria:
 1.   Plan to attend Tennessee State University in the fall of 2015 and have submitted an application to the University for admission as a full-time student.
2.   Submit an application for the scholarship (please save a copy for applicant’s records!)3.   Submit a certified transcript to the Scholarship Committee that includes the ACT and/or SAT scores, GPA, and class rank (if applicable).   GPA should be 2.5 or above.
 4.   Submit three (3) letters of recommendation, a senior picture, and a brief autobiography that’sTYPED, double-spaced, and SIGNED.
 5.   Complete an interview with the Scholarship Committee at a specified time.
  6.   Write a letter of acceptance of the award to the Nashville Chapter of the TSU Alumni Association.

2015 SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION
This year, Kappa Lambda Omega Chapter will present four (4) types of scholarships in support of the 2015scholarship program. In addition to the chapter’s General Chapter Scholarships, three additional scholarship opportunities have been established. The Non-Traditional Scholarship will support an applicant whose pathway to college isn’t typical. The Lillian Dunn Thomas Scholarship and the Donzaleigh Patterson Scholarship are provided in honor of two members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. who were instrumental in chartering the Kappa Lambda Omega Chapter. These scholarships will be awarded to applicants who have been accepted to, and will attend, Fisk University or Tennessee State University.
